Samsara (2024) is an Indonesian cine-concert film directed by Garin Nugroho, drawn from a Balinese folk tale set in the 1930s. It follows Darta, a working-class man who strikes a Faustian bargain with the Monkey King - sacrificing his unborn child for the wealth he needs to marry into a higher class. Nugroho renders the story in hallucinatory visuals, with gamelan rhythms woven through hardcore beats.
