The Residentie Orkest Den Haag is a symphony orchestra founded in 1904 by Henri Viotta, based in The Hague and resident at the Amare concert hall since 2021. One of the leading orchestras in the Netherlands, it has a history of attracting major conductors including Arturo Toscanini, Leonard Bernstein and Jaap van Zweden. Alongside the symphonic canon, the orchestra runs an extensive education programme reaching over 30,000 schoolchildren each year, and regularly performs crossover projects beyond classical music. From the 2025/2026 season, German-Japanese conductor Jun Märkl serves as chief conductor, succeeding Anja Bihlmaier.
The Residentie Orkest set a record in the 2025/2026 season with over two thousand sold concert series - the highest number since the move to Amare.
For the 2026/2027 season, American violinist Stefan Jackiw is appointed as the new artist in residence; he opens the season with Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto under the direction of Jun Märkl.
Jun Märkl officially took office as chief conductor of the Residentie Orkest from the 2025/2026 season onwards, as successor to Anja Bihlmaier.
The Residentie Orkest returned to the Nieuwe Kerk in The Hague after a year's absence with a series of three chamber music concerts in February, April and May 2025.
In December 2023, the orchestra announced the appointment of Jun Märkl as chief conductor for a minimum of four seasons, starting in 2025/2026; at the same time, the contract of permanent guest conductor Richard Egarr was extended until 2029.
