Bombino, the Grammy-nominated Tuareg guitarist from Niger, brings his distinctive 'Tuareggae' sound to Maastricht. Desert guitars meet reggae rhythms in a powerful live performance.
Bombino, born Omara Moctar in 1980 in the nomadic Tuareg encampment of Tidene near Agadez, Niger, grew up amid political upheaval and taught himself guitar while in exile in Algeria. His sound - Tuareg guitar music woven through with blues, rock and reggae, sung in Tamasheq - earned him a global following. The Dan Auerbach-produced Nomad (2013) launched his international career, and Deran (2018) brought him a Grammy nomination, making him the first artist from Niger to receive that honour. His most recent studio album, Sahel (2023), was recorded in Casablanca and carries deeply personal and politically charged songs about the Tuareg people.
