Black Sun Empire is a Dutch drum and bass trio from Utrecht, formed in 1997 by René Verdult and brothers Micha and Milan Heyboer. Widely regarded as leaders of the harder, darker end of the genre, they built their reputation on a neurofunk sound rooted in the techstep tradition. Alongside their own releases they run the Blackout Music NL label and the Blackout event brand, which has grown into a global platform for dark drum and bass.
Blackout Music NL released the compilation 'Blackout: Best Of 2025' on January 5, 2026, featuring Black Sun Empire tracks 'Mysterion' (with Disphonia) and 'Tremor' (with Audio), among others.
Black Sun Empire is scheduled in 2026 for performances in Wiesen (Austria) and Utrecht (TivoliVredenburg), as part of a tour through three countries.
The group performed no fewer than 41 shows worldwide in 2025, one of their busiest annual schedules in years.
Crater 6's Halloween edition at Graanfabriek brings together drum & bass acts Black Sun Empire, Merikan, Original Sin and Kookaburra.
Black Sun Empire plays 013 in Tilburg on 28 November 2026.
