Ben van Gelder NY Quintet
Jazz pianist and composer Ben van Gelder performs his latest work with his New York Quintet, featuring drummer Jeff Ballard and his brother Gideon van Gelder on piano.
Ben van Gelder (born 1988, Groningen) is a Dutch alto saxophonist and composer regarded internationally as an authority on his instrument. He moved to New York at seventeen and spent a decade performing and studying alongside leading figures such as Mark Turner, Ambrose Akinmusire and David Binney, building a close association with the Jazz Gallery. His 2023 album Manifold - a large-ensemble work centred on the pipe organ, performed by an international octet - landed on The New York Times playlist and cemented his reputation as one of the most distinctive jazz composers of his generation.
Van Gelder collaborated on the album Relief Party by guitarist Reinier Baas, on which he plays alto saxophone on the track 'Wild Bill' together with drummer Louis Cole.
Written in Music called Manifold 'one of the most striking and strongest Dutch jazz records of recent decades'.
Van Gelder presented Manifold during November Music 2023 with his international eight-piece band.
The track 'Spectrum' from Manifold made The New York Times tip list.
Manifold was released on June 16, 2023 via Dox Records, recorded at the Amsterdam Orgelpark with organist Kit Downes as the central player.

Four Dutch jazz musicians - pianist Reinier Baas, saxophonist Ben van Gelder, drummer Han Bennink and double bassist Joris Roelofs - perform together in Nijmegen.

Guitarist Reinier Baas celebrates his prestigious Boy Edgarprijs with fellow musicians Ben van Gelder, Han Bennink and Joris Roelofs on a special tour.
