Wolf and Dog

Wolf and Dog (Lobo e Cão) is set on São Miguel, the largest island of the Azores. Ana grows up with her mother and grandmother in a community where faith and tradition shape what is expected of a girl. Her best friend Luís is just as comfortable wearing a dress as trousers and seeks his own freedom. When Ana's friend Cloé arrives from Canada, she becomes Ana's first love - and the question of what she truly wants from her life comes to the fore.

Varejão made the film with non-professional actors, cast from the islanders themselves, including members of the local queer community. This blurs the boundary between fiction and documentary throughout. The cinematography is by Rui Xavier.

The film won the main prize at the Giornate degli Autori at the Venice Film Festival in 2022 and has never been shown in the Netherlands before. The screening takes place around Rotterdam Pride.
