The Pain, the Pleasure, the Talk (The Scream)

How do we actually depict female pleasure and pain? What images are we familiar with, and do they ring true? During THE PAIN. THE PLEASURE. THE TALK, we explore these familiar images of women in pain and women experiencing pleasure.

We begin with a short media lecture on how pain and pleasure of women are portrayed in art and media, and where those images - which often shape our own imagination - actually come from. We also examine how they influence our own experience of pain and pleasure.

Then we speak with Floor Houwink ten Cate, who is in the midst of her research for the performance THE SCREAM. In it, she seeks a new visual language for pain and pleasure - but what might that look like? Together with media experts, other creators, and Floor, we explore how to break open old images and challenge our imagination.
