Philosophy and Spirituality Course: William James — Stadsklooster Utrecht, Utrecht

American philosopher and psychologist William James (1842-1910) is known as one of the most optimistic thinkers in history. In his classic The Varieties of Religious Experience (1902), he explores how experiences of 'the higher' help people find meaning in their lives, and why religious notions enable people to live more fully.

This four-part course runs on Tuesday evenings: 27 October, 3 November, 10 November and 17 November. Each session focuses on a different theme: the reality of spiritual experiences (chapter 3), the integration of the divided self (chapter 6), characteristics of mystical experiences (chapter 11) and the consequences of pluralism (chapter 14). You will read most of the accompanying texts at home beforehand. The course is led by philosopher Annerieke Bakker and is designed for a minimum of 5 and maximum of 10 participants. Coffee and tea are included.

Participants must obtain the book before the first session: William James, The Varieties of Religious Experience (Abraxas, 2010/2022). If the course fee is a barrier, please contact info@stadskloosterutrecht.nl.
