Globe Autumn School - Passive Participation
Heuvellaan Hilversum, Hilversum
THIS TICKET GRANTS PASSIVE PARTICIPATION IN ALL ACTIVITIES
Language of instruction: English
From 16 to 18 October 2026, Heuvellaan Hilversum is dedicated to Johann Joachim Quantz (1697-1773): flautist, composer, flute maker and flute teacher to the Prussian King Frederick the Great. His treatise on the flute remains a standard work in historically informed performance practice to this day.
Professional and amateur recorder and traverso players, as well as instrument makers, gather for three days to discuss Quantz as a composer, maker and performance-practice thinker, and to explore his significance for 18th-century music. The programme includes lectures, masterclasses, open sessions, an instrument market, a concert, a forum discussion and an introductory traverso workshop for secondary school students.
Lectures
Sascha Mommertz (recorder and traverso player) gives a lecture on the recorder in the time of Frederick the Great: which instruments and repertoire were common in Germany, and what position did the recorder hold? Canadian traverso maker Jean-François Beaudin, specialist in reconstructing Quantz flutes, discusses the specific properties of the Quantz flute in his lecture. During the forum discussion, teachers and makers engage with the audience about Quantz as musician, teacher and maker.
