Barokopera Amsterdam

The Indian Queen is one of Henry Purcell's most intriguing semi-operas, based on a play by John Dryden and Robert Howard. The work was first performed as spoken drama in 1664 - more than three decades before Purcell composed his music - and has come down to us in fragmented form.

The work moves between theatre and opera, between speech and song. This open structure gives each generation the freedom to fill the space in its own way. The original plot tells of an impossible encounter.
