When We Were Birds

When We Were Birds is the first collaboration between saxophonist Yuri Honing, known as 'the Nick Cave of jazz', and Edison Award winners Ineke Vandoorn (vocals) and Marc van Vugt (guitar).

All three have previously worked with artists such as Thomas Chapin, Robin Eubanks, Norma Winstone and Vince Mendoza. During their very first concert, they performed completely freely on stage - without arrangements or prior preparation. That session was recorded with just three microphones and resulted, with the help of pop producer Sander van Herk, in the live album When We Were Birds.

The music draws from a poetic idea: a sense of freedom and innocence, of a time before rhythm was measured, before songs had structure, before emotions needed explanation. Colourful compositions and adventurous improvisations take centre stage.
