RBO 26/27: Swan Lake
The Royal Ballet's Swan Lake, choreographed by Liam Scarlett, features Tchaikovsky's iconic score and stunning visual design.
Swan Lake is the world's most frequently performed ballet, composed by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky and first staged at Moscow's Bolshoi Theatre in 1877. Critics were initially dismissive, but the 1895 St. Petersburg revival by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov set the template for virtually every production since. In the Netherlands, choreographer Rudi van Dantzig created his own version for Dutch National Ballet in 1988 - with sets and costumes by Toer van Schayk - which one leading critic called 'the most beautiful Swan Lake ever'.
The Shanghai Ballet opened a 44-day Dutch tour on August 28, 2026 with Swan Lake at the World Forum Theater in The Hague, for a sold-out audience of 1,500 spectators.
The National Ballet brings back Rudi van Dantzig's version to the stage of the National Opera & Ballet in Amsterdam, exactly 150 years after the world premiere of Tchaikovsky's score.
In June 2026 there were multiple performances of Swan Lake at the RAI Theater and the Brabanthallen in Den Bosch, as part of a new European tour production.
The Shanghai Ballet performed in the 'white scenes' with 48 dancers on stage at the same time, which brought the audience in The Hague to their feet for a standing ovation.
