About

Stut Theater is a community theatre company from Utrecht, founded in 1977 by Marlies Hautvast and Jos Bours. It creates multidisciplinary productions on social themes - migration, mental health, informal care, youth welfare - performed not by professional actors but by people with lived experience of the subject matter. The company's name refers to the pit props used in coal mines: just as a stut holds up tunnels, the company aims to hold space for voices that would otherwise go unheard. To date, Stut has staged over 87 productions, given more than 1,650 performances and reached over 150,000 audience members.
