Jonathan Meiburg is an American musician, writer and biologist, best known as the singer and songwriter of indie rock band Shearwater, which he has led since 1999. He left Okkervil River in 2008 to focus on Shearwater full-time, and later co-founded Loma with Emily Cross and Dan Duszynski. Alongside his music career, Meiburg holds a master's degree in geography and wrote the acclaimed book 'A Most Remarkable Creature' (2021) about caracaras. His scientific curiosity runs through everything he does: for the new Shearwater album 'The New World' (2026) he joined a research expedition to Antarctica.
Shearwater released their eleventh studio album 'The New World' on July 31, 2026, recorded over four years in London, Berlin and Texas, among other places.
Shearwater and Loma announced the co-headlining 'When Can I See You?' tour for November 2026 - the band's first live shows since 2018.
For his next book, 'The Secret Land: The Once And Future Life Of Antarctica', Meiburg participated in Expedition PS152 to the Antarctic Ocean in December 2025.
