Gregory Frateur (Dez Mona)
Gregory Frateur pays homage to jazz divas with Billie Holiday at the centre, performing distinctive reworkings of classics with his ensemble.
Gregory Frateur is the Belgian singer, composer and performer at the heart of the Antwerp music collective Dez Mona, which he co-founded in 2003 with double bassist Nicolas Rombouts. Named after Desdemona, Othello's wife in Shakespeare's tragedy, the band weaves jazz, gospel, spirituals and theatrical drama into a dark, layered sound that critics have compared to Nina Simone and Antony and the Johnsons. Beyond Dez Mona, Frateur works as a maker and performer in theatre and contemporary dance.
Gregory Frateur and Nicolas Rombouts release their joint album 'ECHO_RE_ECHO' on 17 October 2025, ten years after their artistic farewell with Dez Mona.
The single 'Call It an Escape', a preview of 'ECHO_RE_ECHO', will be added to the Radio 1 playlist in spring 2025.
Frateur will premiere a music and dance performance in May 2025 that he developed as creator and performer together with choreographer Ann Van den Broek.
On 27 January 2024, Dez Mona celebrates its twentieth anniversary with a one-time jubilee concert at the Bourlaschouwburg in Antwerp, featuring Nicolas Rombouts as guest musician, among others.
Frateur and Rombouts together write the theme song for the VRT police series 'Juliet'.
