Flat Earth Society
Flat Earth Society pays an unconventional tribute to John Coltrane on what would have been his 100th birthday, exploring his legacy through unexpected musical paths and bold reinterpretations.
Flat Earth Society is a Belgian big band that has been regarded since 1999 as one of the most idiosyncratic and boundary-pushing acts in Belgian jazz. Led by composer and clarinettist Peter Vermeersch alongside pianist Peter Vandenberghe, the fifteen-piece ensemble blends Belgium's brass band heritage with a restless, unpredictable style in the tradition of Charles Mingus, Sun Ra and Frank Zappa. Over more than 25 years the group has built an extensive discography and toured from Bozar and the Bimhuis to venues across North America.
Flat Earth Society released the album Missa Asinorum, the last record on which Peter Vermeersch plays clarinet.
Peter Vermeersch announced a phased farewell: by 2028, Flat Earth Society must be able to continue without him.
To promote Missa Asinorum, the band performed among others in Ghent, Nijmegen and the Bimhuis in Amsterdam.
In 2024, the band celebrated its 25th anniversary with a tour through North America around the album The One.
