Los Pirañas (COL)
Los Pirañas, a Colombian instrumental supergroup, delivers an explosive blend of champeta, afrobeat, cumbia and chicha with chaotic energy and irresistible grooves.
Eblis Álvarez is a Colombian musician, composer and producer, best known as the founder of the experimental band Meridian Brothers, which he started as a solo project in Bogotá in 1998. His work blends traditional Colombian styles - cumbia, vallenato, salsa - with electronic music, psychedelic rock and avant-garde techniques, filtered through a distinctly absurdist sensibility. He also co-leads the instrumental supergroup Los Pirañas alongside Mario Galeano and Pedro Ojeda.
Meridian Brothers and Mexican Institute of Sound have started a joint tour to promote the album Ruido Tovar, with performances in Calgary, Seattle, Los Angeles, Madrid and Caldas de Reis.
Meridian Brothers and Mexican Institute of Sound released the joint album Ruido Tovar via Ansonia Records, a tribute to Mexican cumbia legend Rigo Tovar with contributions from Beck.
Meridian Brothers released their twelfth studio album Mi Latinoamérica Sufre via Bongo Joe and Ansonia Records, followed by a European and North American tour.
Eblis Álvarez spoke in an interview with Sounds and Colours about the inspiration behind Mi Latinoamérica Sufre and the upcoming world tour of Meridian Brothers.
