Gregory Frateur (Dez Mona)
Gregory Frateur pays homage to jazz divas with Billie Holiday at the centre, performing distinctive reworkings of classics with his ensemble.
Dez Mona is a Belgian band formed in 2003 by vocalist Gregory Frateur and double bassist Nicolas Rombouts, whose music blends jazz, gospel, spirituals and theatrical art-rock in a way that critics have compared to Nina Simone, Antony & the Johnsons and Tom Waits. Starting out in the Brussels underground after a first meeting at the Recyclart festival, the duo built a strong live reputation and went on to collaborate with the Belgian baroque ensemble B.O.X. and producer Paul Webb of Talk Talk. With eight studio albums to their name, they remain one of the most distinctive voices in Flemish alternative music.
The documentary 'Under the Surface' (directed by Guido Verelst), with music by Dez Mona, was broadcast on VRT Canvas on 29 January 2025.
'Under the Surface' premiered in Belgian cinemas on 23 October 2024, following a festival premiere at DOCVILLE in Leuven in March 2024.
Dez Mona released the live album 'SÁGA live in New York' together with baroque ensemble B.O.X., recorded in 2016 at the Prototype Festival in Brooklyn.
The collaborative album 'LUCY' with B.O.X. was also released in May 2022 on Bandcamp, with an ensemble featuring theorbo, baroque harp and serpent.
