Berlage Saxophone Quartet
The Berlage Saxophone Quartet performs saxophone music in Amsterdam.
The Berlage Saxophone Quartet was founded in 2008 in Arno Bornkamp's class at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam and ranks among the Netherlands' leading saxophone quartets. The ensemble - Lars Niederstrasser (soprano), Peter Vigh (alto and in-house arranger), Juani Palop (tenor) and Eva van Grinsven (baritone) - has won a Stipendium at the Deutscher Musikwettbewerb (2011), the Dutch Classical Talent Award (2013) and the Kersjes Prijs (2015). It bridges classical and contemporary repertoire through interdisciplinary collaborations with theatre makers, writers and visual artists. Since late 2024 the quartet is based in 's-Hertogenbosch rather than Amsterdam.
The Berlage Saxophone Quartet has been performing in a new line-up since autumn 2025: Eva van Grinsven switched from the baritone saxophone due to the physical strain of the instrument.
The premiere of the new theater production 'Het Visioen van Berlage' - together with cabaret artist Vincent Bijlo - took place on 4 March 2026 at Theater aan de Parade in Den Bosch, followed by a tour through several Dutch cities.
The quartet moved from Amsterdam to 's-Hertogenbosch and celebrated this on 8 December 2024 with the first edition of the Berlage Saxophone Quartet Festival at Theater aan de Parade.
The province of North Brabant and the municipality of 's-Hertogenbosch jointly grant the quartet € 170,000 in subsidies for the period 2025-2028.
The quartet performed together with Cappella Amsterdam and narrator Jan Brokken at Musis & Stadstheater Arnhem, with music matching the story of consul Jan Zwartendijk.
