Rim Akandoh Jnr. & Amamere
Rim Akandoh Jnr. & Amamere bring Ghanaian guitar highlife from the 1970s with a modern Afro-funky twist. The drummer and composer performs his father's songs and original work full of rhythm and lyrical depth.
Amamere is the eight-piece backing band of Ghanaian drummer and composer Rim Akandoh Jnr., formed in 2022 in Cape Coast. Akandoh Jnr. spent years drumming for highlife legend Ebo Taylor and his Saltpond City Band before launching Amamere to revive the guitar highlife of the 1970s, fused with an Afro-funky vintage sound. Their 2025 debut album "Man Shall Be Free" reworks classics from the repertoire of Akandoh's father, the 'Mighty' Rim Akandoh and his Prince Sparrows Band, alongside pieces from the Osoode medley tradition of Western Ghana and new original compositions.
Rim Akandoh Jnr. & Amamere performed during Sonora, a two-day Afrovism festival at Tolhuistuin (Paradiso Noord) in Amsterdam.
Amamere announced her very first European tour for 2026, following a series of performances in Ghana.
The band performed for the first time outside Ghana during Afrika Festival Hertme in the Netherlands, where a live performance of "Kokonsani" was filmed.
The debut album "Man Shall Be Free" was released on 1 April 2025 on the German label Afro Urban Project, on vinyl, CD and digitally.
The album release concert took place on 22 February 2025 at the +233 Jazz Bar & Grill in Accra, after weeks of daily rehearsals in Cape Coast.
