The Academiegebouw on Broerstraat is the ceremonial main building of the University of Groningen, one of the oldest universities in the Netherlands, founded in 1614. The current nineteenth-century structure houses the Senate Hall, where PhD defences, academic ceremonies and public lectures are held. It also opens its doors for open days and cultural events.
