Antjie Krog in conversation with Ena Jansen about Lady Anne

For the first time, Lady Anne by South African writer and poet Antjie Krog appears in Dutch translation. Emeritus professor of Afrikaans Ena Jansen will discuss this collection and other works from her oeuvre.

In Lady Anne, Krog draws an epic portrait of noblewoman Lady Anne Barnard (1750-1825), who lived as the wife of a colonial administrator at the Cape of Good Hope. Barnard was an independent thinker who left behind diaries, correspondence and watercolours about the colonists and indigenous population. Krog connects that South Africa with the country two hundred years later, gripped by anti-apartheid fury and states of emergency, just before Nelson Mandela's release.

After the conversation, Krog reads from her own work and signs copies.
