In preparation for their second Japanese tour in October, pianist Atzko Kohashi and bassist Tony Overwater perform their repertoire at Splendor. Alongside work from their latest album Porgy, pieces from earlier albums such as A Drum Thing and Crescent will also be featured.

Piano and double bass operate as equal partners: melody and harmony interweave in an interplay that is simultaneously tight, fragile and dynamic. Japanese aesthetics and European curiosity run through the playing of this duo.

About: Atzko Kohashi

Atzko Kohashi is a Japanese jazz pianist based in the Netherlands. She is best known for her long-running duo with bassist Tony Overwater, with whom she recorded albums including A Drum Thing, Crescent and Porgy. Her playing draws on Japanese sensibility and European jazz tradition in equal measure.

Tony Overwater is a Dutch double bassist working primarily in jazz and improvised music. He has a long-standing duo partnership with pianist Atzko Kohashi, with albums including A Drum Thing and Crescent to their name. His playing gives the bass a genuinely melodic voice rather than a purely supportive role.
