Remember the River — Buitenplaats Brienenoord, Rotterdam

What remains when a craft disappears? Until last year, one professional fisherman still worked the Meuse in Rotterdam. With his death, the trade vanished entirely from the city - taking with it the knowledge of river ecosystems that came with it.

Over the past year, Anastasia Eggers has researched the traces of this craft: the history of river fishing in Rotterdam and the reciprocal relationships people built with the river through that trade.

On Saturday 19 September, you can encounter this research. Together, one of the fishing nets that can no longer be used in Rotterdam's waters will be unfolded - a final activation. As a farewell gesture to Rotterdam's fishing heritage, the net will be carried along the edge of Brienenoord island, which has a history as a salmon fishing site.

After the walk, Anastasia Eggers and Sarah Blake of Swamp prepare a dinner that reflects on the sensory connection to the river through fishing, the loss of it, and its transformation.
