The West-Eastern Divan Orchestra was founded in 1999 by conductor Daniel Barenboim and Palestinian-American scholar Edward Said, taking its name from Goethe's poetry anthology West-östlicher Divan. Based in Seville, it brings together young musicians from Israel, the Palestinian territories, and Arab countries to make the case - through music - for coexistence. The UN designated the orchestra a Global Advocate for Cultural Understanding in 2016.
Daniel Barenboim announces the first West-Eastern Divan Festival, taking place from 11 to 18 November 2026 in Berlin with ten concerts at the Philharmonie, the Pierre Boulez Saal and club Berghain.
The orchestra performs on 13 August 2026 at the Waldbühne Berlin together with cellist Yo-Yo Ma and conductor Daniel Barenboim.
In February 2026 the orchestra toured Spain, Italy and Austria under the direction of Zubin Mehta - with violinist María Dueñas as soloist in Madrid and Barcelona.
The summer tour 2025 with pianist Lang Lang as soloist was concluded with standing ovations at sold-out venues, including the Salzburger Festspiele and the Lucerne Festival.
For the first time in the orchestra's history, a tour was led by a conductor other than co-founder Barenboim: Zubin Mehta took charge of the spring tour 2025.
