Sonata Arctica is a Finnish power metal band from Kemi, founded in 1996. Their 1999 debut Ecliptica launched them onto the international scene, and they have since become one of Europe's most enduring acts in the genre. Vocalist and songwriter Tony Kakko and drummer Tommy Portimo are the only remaining founding members, joined by guitarist Elias Viljanen, keyboardist Henrik Klingenberg and bassist Pasi Kauppinen. Eleven studio albums and multiple Finnish chart-toppers later, the band continues to tour the world.
Sonata Arctica and German metal band Rage announced a co-headliner tour for April and May 2027, with Sonata Arctica touring with a live orchestra for the first time in their history.
The band released the standalone single 'Freedom Concept' via Reigning Phoenix Music, as an interlude during their 30th anniversary year and while working on a new studio album.
Sonata Arctica started their 30th Anniversary Tour, with shows throughout Finland and later also throughout Europe.
The band toured North America in September 2025 as co-headliner with Symphony X.
The eleventh studio album Clear Cold Beyond was released in 2024 and was received as a return to the fast, melodic power metal that made the band famous.
