The Night of Rumi
A multilingual festival celebrating the Persian poet Rumi through music, poetry and storytelling, featuring artists performing in Persian, Arabic, Dutch and Turkish traditions.
Shervin Nekuee (Tehran, 1968) is a Dutch-Iranian sociologist, writer and programme maker based in The Hague. He fled Iran at nineteen after refusing to serve in the war against Iraq, and went on to build a dual career as a commentator on the Middle East and as curator of cultural events centred on mysticism and poetry. He wrote De Perzische paradox on Islamic Iran and has for years served as artistic director of the Mystic Festival Rotterdam, bringing together musicians, poets and dancers from Sufi and related mystic traditions.
Nekuee revived his Rumi program in Haarlem, where he brought poetry and music from the Sufi tradition together with musicians.
Nekuee brought the life story of Rumi to the stage with musician Balout Khazraei during a performance in Laren.
