Ramses Shaffy (1933-2009) was a Dutch singer, songwriter and actor of Egyptian-Polish-Russian descent, born in Neuilly-sur-Seine and raised by a foster family in Leiden. From 1964 onwards he built a distinctive body of work - blending chanson, cabaret and theatrical pop - through his ensemble Shaffy Chantant, often alongside Liesbeth List. Songs such as 'Zing, vecht, huil, bid, lach, werk en bewonder' and 'Sammy' have become enduring classics of Dutch popular music.
