Nathan Bowles is an American multi-instrumentalist based in Durham, North Carolina, whose music moves between Appalachian old-time traditions and minimalist drone. He considers himself primarily a percussionist, but his clawhammer banjo and piano are equally central to his sound. Alongside his solo work he plays in the Black Twig Pickers and the long-running drone outfit Pelt, and has collaborated with Steve Gunn, Jake Xerxes Fussell and others. His records have appeared on Paradise of Bachelors and Drag City, drawing praise from Pitchfork, NPR Music and The Wire.
Bowles released 'Seven Lefts' on February 6, 2026, his first fully solo album since 2016, exclusively digitally via Bandcamp.
Music magazine KLOF described 'Seven Lefts' as his most ambitious solo work to date, with pieces running up to sixteen minutes.
The Nathan Bowles Trio released the album 'Are Possible' on July 26, 2024 via Drag City, with bassist Casey Toll and drummer Rex McMurry.
Bowles was on the bill at the Pickathon festival in April 2026, where he performed as a solo artist and as a member of the Nathan Bowles Trio.
