Literary Café featuring writer Marijke Schermer discussing her novels and theatrical works.
Marijke Schermer (Amsterdam, 1975) is a Dutch novelist and playwright who also directed theatre for many years, including with her own Toneelgroep Alaska. She has published four novels with Uitgeverij Van Oorschot - *Mensen in de zon* (2013), *Noodweer* (2016), *Liefde, als dat het is* (2019) and *In het oog* (2024) - and won the Charlotte Köhler Prize for theatre in 2009. Her novels have repeatedly reached the shortlist of the Libris Literature Prize, and her stage texts have been translated into English, German, French, Spanish and Romanian.
On 24 February 2026, Schermer demonstrated for the fourth year in a row at the Russian embassy in Amsterdam, this time with four barrel organs playing the Ukrainian national anthem.
ILFU published an essay by Schermer in March 2026 about dialogue in the novel, as part of the series 'De blauwdruk' on the writer's craft.
*In het oog* made the shortlist of the Libris Literature Prize 2025; the prize ultimately went to Safae el Khannoussi with *Oroppa*.
Schermer appeared as a guest lecturer in Media Literacy during the Frontaal Writers' Camp 2025.
The novel *In het oog* was published on 23 February 2024 by Van Oorschot and was immediately celebrated in NRC, Trouw and De Groene Amsterdammer.
