Le Carnaval des Animaux is a suite for chamber ensemble by French composer Camille Saint-Saëns, written in 1886. Its fourteen movements each portray a different animal, from the roaring lion to the graceful swan - the latter becoming one of the most beloved pieces in the cello repertoire. Saint-Saëns kept the work largely under wraps during his lifetime, fearing it would overshadow his more serious output.
