About

John Illsley (Leicester, 1949) is the co-founder and bassist of Dire Straits, the British rock band he formed in 1977 alongside Mark Knopfler and two others. He and Knopfler were the only two members to stay with the band throughout its entire existence, from debut to disbandment in 1995, selling over 120 million albums along the way. In 2018 Illsley was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Dire Straits. Beyond music he has released eight solo albums, written an autobiography, and pursues painting as a serious second career.
