Fred Wesley is an American trombonist who served as musical director of James Brown's JB's in the 1960s and 70s, making him one of the architects of funk. He arranged Brown's biggest hits and co-wrote songs like Hot Pants and Doing it to Death. After leaving the JB's he played with The Count Basie Orchestra, Parliament-Funkadelic, and artists ranging from Ray Charles to Lenny Kravitz.
