Antonín Dvořák's Symphony No. 9 in E minor, Op. 95, nicknamed "From the New World", is one of the most performed symphonies in the classical canon. Composed in 1893 while Dvořák directed the National Conservatory of Music in New York, it draws on African American spirituals and Native American folk music alongside the composer's own Bohemian roots. Its celebrated slow movement - built around a plaintive English horn melody - has become one of the most recognisable passages in all of orchestral music.
The Concertgebouworkest performs Dvořák's Ninth Symphony on April 17 and 19, 2026 in Amsterdam, conducted by Andrés Orozco-Estrada, combined with the world premiere of Rob Zuidam's Orewoet with soprano Katrien Baerts.
The Concertgebouworkest also performs the Ninth Symphony on April 16, 2026 on tour in Antwerp, likewise under Orozco-Estrada.
The Radio Filharmonisch Orkest presents the Ninth Symphony on March 6, 2026 in the Grote Zaal of TivoliVredenburg Utrecht, in a program that also includes works by Bernstein and Billy Childs.
Google honored the legacy of the symphony with a commemorative Doodle, which also highlighted the role of the work in the Apollo 11 moon landing of 1969.
